Is the end coming?

One of the fascinations of humanity is the end of the world. Followers of Jesus have a special interest in the end of human history because they believe that the world will culminate in a return of Jesus and the restoration of the world into a new heaven and new earth. In his final conversations with his disciples, Jesus discussed this culmination. One of the concerns of the disciples was when will the end come?

Here is Jesus’ answer:

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

“Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’” (Mark 13)

Several lessons: 1. Do not let anyone tell you they know the exact time of Jesus’ return. 2. Make sure you live like Jesus could come at any time. (Read yesterday’s blog to see how to live ready for the end of the world.)
